About the HIV test
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. Without treatment, it can gradually weaken the immune system and lead to the development of AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

HIV infection may be asymptomatic or, in the early stages, may present with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, a sore throat, a rash, night sweats or swollen lymph nodes.

Early detection of the infection allows for prompt access to specialist care. Modern HIV treatment can effectively control the infection over the long term.
The OraQuick® HIV Self Test is a home screening test for the detection of antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in oral fluid. A reactive/positive result must always be confirmed by a follow-up laboratory test..
When to consider taking the test
  • If you wish to discreetly determine your current HIV status at home.
  • If you believe you may have been in a high-risk situation and wish to carry out a screening test.

How the test works
The test is designed to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HIV infection.
  • Press the flat swab firmly against the gum and wipe it once across the upper gum and once across the lower gum.
  • Follow the instructions supplied in the pack exactly.
  • The result is interpreted based on the appearance of the control and result zones on the test strip.
  • A built-in procedural control helps to verify that the test has been carried out correctly.
Important:  A negative result may not rule out a very early-stage infection, as antibodies may not be produced immediately after infection. If you have recently been in a high-risk situation, are experiencing symptoms or have any doubts, seek professional medical advice.
